Sèvres soft paste porcelain vase. Apple green ground with tooled and burnished gold decoration, bulbous pear shape, cover with knob formed of raised posy and pierced with fan-shape patterns, shoulders mounted with (later) gilt bronze marine head masks within bull rushes, the vase resting in a gilt bronze cup with an oval foot. Shaped front reserve painted with a polychrome pastoral scene, the reverse with a posy of flowers.
Provenance
Formed part of the stock of the dealer Philippe-Claude Maëlrondt which, following his death, was auctioned at a sale held in Paris, commencing 15 November 1824: ‘182. Beau vase forme contournée, fond vert orné de deux cartouches; le principal représente un paysage avec sujet pastoral; l’autre offre un riche bouquet de fleurs. Ce vase est garni de masques de dieux marins, indiquant des anses, d’un couvercle à jour, et porté sur son socle de bronze doré’, annotated in ink, ‘1800 [francs]’. Recorded by Benjamin Jutsham as having been purchased in Paris by Sir Charles Long, it was delivered to Carlton House from the Customs House on 14 January 1825. The description reads ‘A Large Seve Porcelaine Vase & Cover, of Oval form, Green Ground, painted in Landscape & Figures, Mounted in Or Molu, Man Head for handles’. The entry is annotated ‘Delivered to Mr Benois’. Recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No.119 An Oval shaped Vase and Cover of green Seve Porcelain, the top, pierced and painted in wreaths of flowers, with embossed flowers for knobs, the front painted in Landscape & Figures, Goat &c., the back in flowers – ormolu Triton mask handles with circular and square base, having china pannels – 17 In. high’.
