Fabergé was attracted to the rich colour of rhodonite with its black and grey veining; it was mined in the Urals and used for this carved frame. François Birbaum, his senior designer, says that the stone (also known as orletz) was second only to nephrite in the firm’s production. The frame contains a watercolour portrait miniature of Princess Mary (1897–1965), the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary who married Viscount Lascelles (later the 6th Earl of Harewood) in 1922. The portrait miniature was painted in about 1906 and the frame was purchased by the Prince of Wales (later King George V) from the London branch in December 1909 at a cost of £14 15s.
