In the right of the foreground is the tomb of Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester from 1531-51 and again from 1553-55. William Waynfleet succeeded Henry of Beaufort (1375-1447) as Bishop of Winchester in 1447 and built his chantry chapel on the north side of the Cathedral presbytery. Waynfleet founded Magdalen College in Oxford and was Provost of Eton College. This photograph is part of a series that Wilson took of English Cathedrals between 1861 and 1863. They included Peterborough, York, Durham and Exeter. This photograph is a carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.
