Photograph of the opening of the new Southwark Bridge, 6 June 1921, featuring the royal landau and four horses carrying King George V and Queen Mary, followed by other carriages. It was designed by Ernest George and Basil Mott, and built by Sir William Arrol & Company, replacing an earlier 19th century iron bridge, that had become too narrow for early 20th century traffic. Construction began in 1913 but was interrupted by the First World War, finally completing in 1921. It has five steel arches supported by four granite stone river piers, designed to align with Blackfrairs and London Bridges, to make it easier for river traffic to pass through. One of seven photographs on an album page (RCIN 2303829).
Provenance
From an album of photographs acquired and arranged by Queen Mary, between July 1918 and June 1921
