Photograph of the interior of Ginnett's circus tent with a circular enclosure with a central pole in the foreground. Inside the enclosure stand two horses and three men; the blurred figure on the right wears traditional clown's outfit with a pointed hat. Seated behind an array of potted plants, are members of the Royal family; these include the children of Princess Beatrice; Prince Leopold of Battenberg and Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg seated on the left. Prince Alexander of Battenberg is seated alongside Queen Victoria who holds binoculars. On the left of the Queen are her grandchilden, Princess Alexandra and Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh.
The circus performance took place in a field close to the River Dee on the 1 June 1893. The Queen recorded her impressions of the circus in her journal for that day, writing:
'The Circus belongs to a Mr Ginnett. The first item on the Programme I thought very pretty, a Quadrille ridden by 8 men & women in Spanish costumes. The clowns were very amusing & delighted the Children, & there were some very clever piebald donkeys. Mrs Ginnett, wife of the proprietor rode very well. All the horses seemed so well broken. There was a ring in the centre on which saw dust was strewn.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 1 June 1893 (Princess Beatrice's copies) -
