Photograph of the artist shown in full-length, seated on a rustic stone bench, facing front with his arms and legs crossed. He wears a light-coloured hat, spectacles, a dark-coloured velvet jacket over a light-coloured shirt with large patterned bow tie, dark-coloured trousers, white socks and dark-coloured suede shoes. The bench is against a plain wall with an air vent on the left-hand side and some ivy visible on the right.
Kasterine was commissioned by Radio Times to photograph Hockney in his Paris studio, where the artist worked between 1973 and 1975, but he soon decided to move the sitting outside, to one of the ancient courtyards of the building with its ivy-clad walls and cobbled paving. ‘I knew at once that it was there that I wanted to photograph him’, recalls Kasterine, and the result is a frank, almost candid portrait of the sitter, whose style and dress sense denote the conscious unconventionality of the bohemian artist.Provenance
