Photograph of Mr Hill, the kennel master, under a tree surrounded by dogs from the Windsor kennels. The group of dogs includes Borzois, pugs, fox terriers, greyhounds and dachshunds. Either Mr. Joseph Hill or Mr. Oliver Hill (apparently unrelated to each other), who succeeded Henry Smith at the Royal Kennels in April 1890.
The kennels in the Home Park at Windsor were built in 1840-41 and housed between 70 and 100 dogs at any one time. The dogs were both domestic pets and working dogs, and Queen Victoria regular drove down to see them. She was an early advocate against animal cruelty and became the patron of the RSPCA and Battersea Dogs Home.Provenance
