Photograph of the terrace and fountain at Rosenau Palace, Coburg. The ruins of Lauterburg are visible in the distance. A water fountain stands in the centre of the photograph with a tower in the left background.
The Palace was the birthplace and childhood home of Prince Albert. Prince Albert had spent a happy childhood in his father's country residences, including Rosenau, and the influence of the Prince's upbringing can be seen in many aspects of his later life. For example, the design of the terrace at Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight, resembles this terrace at Rosenau.
This is one of a series of photographs that were commissioned by Queen Victoria to be presented to her husband Prince Albert on his birthday in August 1857. Bedford, accompanied by his wife, travelled to Coburg in June and early July to photograph the places associated with the Prince's childhood.Provenance
