Lady Churchill was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria from 1854 until her death on Christmas Eve 1900, making her the longest serving member of Queen Victoria's household. Horatia Stopford was appointed Maid of Honour in 1857 and Woman of the Bedchamber in 1877.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2906732.
