Photograph of the 'Dunedin Crozier' by Francis Bedford (1815-94). The decorative crozier was designed by William Burges for the newly appointed Bishop of Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1865-6. The crozier is made of ivory, silver, precious and semi-precious stones. Burges was an architect and designer, known for his Gothic Revival style. He worked in the studio of Matthew Digby Wyatt in the 1850s when Bedford was producing lithographs for Wyatt's publications. It is probable that Bedford knew Burges through this commission, and consequently undertook the photography of a number of objects designed by him.
Provenance
The photograph is part of an album of photographs documenting the designs and interiors of William Burges (1827-1881) First documented in the Royal Collection in the reign of King George V
