-
Full length marble statue of Queen Victoria in classical dress, wearing a coronet chased with dolphins. Her hair is coiled and plaited and in her right hand she holds a laurel wreath and in her left, a scroll. The corners of her toga are embroidered with emblems of the British Isles. This life-size portrait of the young Queen Victoria was intended to be like a Greek statue and was originally partly coloured. She is shown as the upholder of the law and the bestower of honour. The sculptor attempted to give royalty 'in the look and action', without any of the usual symbols. Text from Victoria & Albert: Art & Love.
Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria in person in October 1844, delivered 1847.
