Les Portières des Dieux: Neptune 1769
Woven silk and wool tapestry | 372 x 282 cm (whole object) | RCIN 19548
-
One panel from a series of Gobelins tapestries, Les Portières des Dieux, depicting Neptune, symbolising Water, seated on a cloud above a large golden boat, within a border of flowers and foliage. From a set of the Four Elements, woven in the workshop of Jacques Neilson after a design by Claude Audran III.
Jacques Neilson was head of the horizontal loom workshop of the Gobelins. The manufactory comprised three workshops, two with vertical looms (haute lisse) and one with horizontal (basse lisse). The fact of this having been woven on a horizontal loom is evidenced by the "reversing" of its design: Neptune holds his trident in his left hand. -
