Gobelins tapestry panel depicting Mahommed Ali's massacre of the Mamelukes in Cairo, in which the turbanned figure of Mahommed Ali Pasha is seated under a canopy with three attendants, one of whom points to the city of Cairo partly obscured by smoke, after a design by Horace Vernet (1789-1863).
Provenance
Shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and subsequently presented to Queen Victoria by the Emperor Napoleon III. It was hung in the Saloon at Marlborough House and is shown in a photograph taken c. 1896.
