A spherical, partly-gilt, silver box with central hinge, embossed and chased on one side with the royal coat of arms, and on the other with the coat of arms of the Duke of Edinburgh. The box opens to reveal an orange tree, showing a roundel with the jugate profiles of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, surrounded by orange blossoms and enamelled leaves.
The Duke of Edinburgh described Stuart Devlin as ‘probably the most original and creative goldsmith and silversmith of his time and one of the greats of all time.‘ Devlin worked on numerous occasions for members of the royal family and was granted a royal warrant in 1982. In the 1970s and 80s Devlin produced a number of eggs and boxes containing ‘surprises’ in the manner of Faberge. This example was a personal gift from the goldsmith to the royal couple.Provenance
Presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh by Stuart Devlin for their silver wedding anniversary, 1972.
