  • A bulbous circular pale blue porcelain vase, raised lip of mouth shaped with outline of leaves, body incised in low relief, moulded and pierced with bunch of peonies, stems of flowers extend to base of vase. On circular wooden base with plaque.

This vase was made by the eminent ceramicist Dr Shin Sang-Ho, using traditional forms and techniques. White porcelain was the most dominant form of ceramics in Korea during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). The vase displayed here takes the shape of a traditional Korean moon-jar, but it is decorated with peonies in low-relief, rather than being unadorned. The stems of the flowers extend down to the base of the vase, and the main body has areas of piercing which reflect the shape of the peonies’ leaves. The vase is glazed in a very pale blue, with a few areas of red to suggest the stamen of the flowers.

    Provenance

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by President and Mrs. Chun Doo-hwan of South Korea on the occasion of a visit and lunch at Buckingham Palace on 8th April 1986. Another vase by Shin Sang-Ho, RCIN 11730, was also presented at this time.

Dr. Shin Sang-Ho is a distinguished Korean ceramicist. He is the former Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University in Seoul.
