Designs for 'Laureate's Choice'
RCIN 1102981
-
Almost since the inception of the position, the Poet Laureate has traditionally been paid with a butt (about 720 bottles) of sack (or sherry, its modern equivalent). The custom lapsed in 1790 but was reinstated for Ted Hughes in 1984 by the Sherry Institute of Spain. On her appointment as Poet Laureate in 2009, Carol Ann Duffy was invited to Jerez by the Sherry Institute to be presented with her butt of sherry. Whilst there, she wrote the poem At Jerez to commemorate the visit. Stephen Raw designed the label for the bottles of sherry produced from the butt and the poem appears on the label.
