This book describes and illustrates the abject conditions of the population of the East End, and the causes of disease and death in the crowded and filthy conditions. It also puts forward ways in which these conditions could be improved. Charles Dickens’ concern about the living conditions of the working classes was shared by a number of other Victorian writers. George Godwin, FRS, architect, author and editor of 'The Builder', known for its campaigns for health and housing reform, wrote first-hand reports on slum overcrowding, which he gathered together in three publications, of which 'Another blow for life' is the last. The abject conditions of the population of the East End, and the causes of disease and death in the crowded and filthy conditions, are illustrated by John Brown with Godwin’s humorous, cynical captions. This object was displayed at the Charles Dickens Reception at Buckingham Palace, 2012.
