Shrewsbury School is a public school in Shropshire. It was founded by Edward VI in 1552 to provide education for the people of Shrewsbury following the dissolution of two monastic schools in the town in the 1540s. The school celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1952 during which Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit where she was presented with this book containing a catalogue of the bindings in the library. The book was bound by Roger Powell and contains the Royal Arms surmounted by the Tudor Crown. Surrounding the Arms is the name of the school and the date of The Queen's visit.
This was one of the books selected by Olwen Hedley in the 1960s as a fine example of bookbinding in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Hedley’s ‘Additional Bookbindings’ serve as a supplement to the catalogue of fine bindings compiled in 1893 by the Royal Librarian Richard Rivington Holmes.
Provenance
Presented to The Queen in commemoration of her visit to Shrewsbury School on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the foundation, October 24th 1952.
