Queen Mary was not very impressed by this biography of her, writing on the flyleaf ‘I have annotated this book to show what a number of inventions are written about one’. She has crossed out large sections, has frequently written ‘no’ in the margins, and in other places has corrected and commented on the text: against a paragraph describing her tour to India in 1905 and explaining that it held such interest for her that she never seemed bored, Queen Mary has written ‘As a matter of fact the Queen is never bored’. It is no wonder that Queen Mary found this biography unsatisfactory. 'Charlotte Cavendish' was a pseudonym of Netley Lucas, a notorious conman and criminal who used a number of aliases including 'Evelyn Graham', whom a newspaper article from December 1930 describes as 'appearing like a meteor in the sky of the literary world'. Using pseudonyms, Lucas offered to publishers authentic and intimate biographies of illustrious people, which then turned out to be wildly inaccurate. He then set up his own publishing house under the name 'Albert E Marriott'. Before becoming a biographer and publisher, Lucas had been in and out of borstal and prison, had been deported from Canada for operating a bogus employment agency, and had published numerous articles about his criminal escapades. Queen Mary has pasted newspaper clippings unmasking Lucas into the front of this biography.
