New edition, corrected and much enlarged. Half leather bound in brown goatskin. Contains manuscript plans and annotations in a nineteenth-century hand. The first guidebooks to Windsor Castle were published in the mid-eighteenth century, coinciding with the development of Windsor as a popular tourist destination. The local bookseller Joseph Pote first published 'Les Delices de Windsore, or, A Description of Windsor Castle and the country adjacent' in 1755; Charles Knight's 'A Windsor Guide' appeared in 1783. Both books contained descriptive tours of the Castle, and appeared in many later editions. Costing around two shillings and conveniently pocket-sized, the guidebooks were both affordable and portable. Charles Knight was a bookseller and stationer based in Windsor. In his 1783 guidebook he describes the Round Tower, which contained the Constable's and Governor's apartments, and informs visitors of the twelve counties supposedly visible from the top of the Tower.
