A Monarch in the Making: From Accession to Coronation

  • The official souvenir publication celebrating His Majesty The King’s accession
  • Features behind-the-scenes images of preparations for the Coronation
  • Published by Royal Collection Trust on 11 July 2023

The official souvenir publication charting His Majesty The King’s accession to the throne and first year as monarch is now available, featuring never-before-seen photographs of preparations for the historic Coronation.

The publication takes a closer look at the events that culminated in the Coronation on 6 May 2023. Beginning with His Majesty’s first days as monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the book follows many firsts for The King – from State Visits and handing out Maundy Money to continuing the tradition of sending wishes for special birthdays and wedding anniversaries to the UK public.

The beautifully produced hardback book provides a unique insight into the finer details of planning the Coronation – a process known as ‘Operation Golden Orb’. Images of the creation of Their Majesties’ outfits feature alongside stunning photographs and detailed descriptions of each item of the royal regalia, including the Imperial State Crown and the Jewelled Sword of Offering.

Other important aspects of the Coronation day explored in the book include the military procession, the service and the music, from the Ascension Choir to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Coronation Anthem, ‘Make a Joyful Noise’.

Throughout, the book is richly illustrated with photographs of The King and Queen performing their new duties, meeting with the public and supporting charitable causes – highlighting the many steps that have steadily transformed the reign of Queen Elizabeth II into the reign of King Charles III.

A Monarch in the Making: From Accession to Coronation is available from 11 July 2023 at £19.95 from Royal Collection Trust shops and www.rct.uk/shop. It will be available from all good bookshops from 27 July at £24.95.
