Official chinaware celebrating centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth goes on sale

A new range of official chinaware and homeware produced by Royal Collection Trust, a department of the Royal Household, goes on sale today (Friday, 7 November) ahead of the centenary in 2026 Queen Elizabeth II’s birth.

The official Queen Elizabeth II Centenary range takes inspiration from highlights from the wardrobe of the late monarch, which have now become part of the Royal Collection under the care of Royal Collection Trust. In celebration of the life of the Queen Elizabeth, approximately 200 items of clothing, accessories, and archival materials will go on show in Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style, a major exhibition at The King’s Gallery, London, next April. 

The new products, including an exclusive collection of fine bone china, draw their motifs from the patterns and intricate embroidery seen on some of the most memorable dresses worn by Queen Elizabeth. 

At the heart of the range are symbols of the United Kingdom: roses, shamrocks, thistles and daffodils. Roses, shamrocks and thistles, along with leeks, were a focal point of Norman Hartnell’s design for the Coronation dress, worn by the young Queen in 1953. Fine bone china mugs and side plates, both available in four colourways, reprise the motifs for these beautiful everyday kitchen accessories. 

The colours of the range – sky blue, foxglove pink, daffodil yellow and leaf green – are inspired by the use of coloured embellishment on the Coronation dress; when Hartnell presented the Queen with nine designs, she accepted the eighth but suggested that the embroidery should be in colour rather than all silver and gold.

Elegant fine bone china teacups and saucers and a pillbox have been made with collectors in mind. 

Among the exhibition highlights will be the wedding dress designed by Norman Hartnell for the 21-year-old bride in 1947. Made of ivory silk and satin, the dress featured crystals and seed pearls hand-embroidered in the pattern of wheatsheaves, a motif that is repeated on a pink fine bone china tankard.

Official Royal Collection Trust chinaware is made in the UK, being cast, fired, and decorated by hand according to the same traditional techniques that have been at the heart of the British chinaware industry in Stoke-on-Trent for the past 250 years. Each piece of chinaware is finished with 22-carat gold.

As well as adorning all the items of British-made chinaware, the symbolic floral pattern can be seen on complementary items including embossed teaspoons, a tea towel and a velvet tree decoration. 

Seen throughout the range and central to the design of a limited-edition coin is the EIIR cypher which featured on Her late Majesty’s Robe of Estate, also worn for the Coronation.

Tea caddies of a specially created blend of Earl Grey tea and a biscuit tin of Scottish shortbread complete the range, with the reusable tins being made in London using solar power.

The exceptional craftsmanship and care that went into the creation of each item in the late Queen’s wardrobe has served as the inspiration for the products in this centenary range, from keepsakes to pieces like the teaspoons that can be used every day.’
