Winter and Summer

Rosalba Carriera’s pastels were widely admired across Europe. The personification of Winter in a fur wrap was one of Smith’s prized possessions, and several collectors sought their own versions of it. Summer, with her garland of flowers, was probably also among the many works by Carriera that belonged to Smith, who acted as an agent to the artist. A small printed devotional token showing the three kings was found inside the back of the pastel of Winter during conservation. It was placed there by the artist to protect the work during its travels.
