William III and Alamgir

In 1698, after the East India Company clashed violently with the Mughals over failed trade negotiations, William III (r. 1650–1702) appointed Sir William Norris as ambassador to the Mughal court. His task was to ‘establish a friendly and good understanding’ with Emperor Alamgir (r. 1658–1707).
