Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It is open to visitors throughout the year.

Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has since been the home of 39 monarchs. Today The Queen spends most of her private weekends at the Castle.

Your ticket includes a multimedia tour.

Admission to the Castle on the day is free for Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Advantage Card holders.

Different prices apply when the State Apartments are closed.

Enjoy free re-admission for a year by asking us to treat your ticket purchase as a donation.
At the end of your visit, ask a Warden to stamp your ticket to convert it into a 1- Year Pass.

Windsor Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Entrance to the State Apartments closes 30 minutes after the last admission time.

Windsor Castle closures

As Windsor Castle is a working royal palace, sometimes the entire Castle or the State Apartments within the Castle need to be closed at short notice.

The castle will be closed 12-13 June.

Semi-State Rooms closures

The Semi-State Rooms usually open from autumn-spring each year. The Semi-State Rooms are not open on days when the State Apartments are closed.

St George's Chapel

St George’s Chapel is open for visitors on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:15 (last entry 16:00). More details are available on the Chapel website.

The safety and wellbeing of our visitors and staff are our priority. In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, we have closed a small number of rooms where social distancing cannot be easily maintained including Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House; and Precinct Tours are temporarily unavailable. We hope to reopen these spaces soon and when it is safe to do so. We suggest you allow 1½-2 hours for your visit. The Castle is at the top of a steep hill, and the visitor route covers long distances. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes.
When you arrive, you will pass through an airport-style security check. Read more about security & luggage.
You can take photographs outside the Castle buildings, but not inside the Castle or within St George's Chapel. Read about photography, filming & mobile phones.
Your ticket includes a multimedia guide available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Mandarin and BSL. We also have a guide for families. We recommend you bring your own headphones to use with the multimedia guide.
You will also have the option to buy souvenir guidebooks to collect on the day to accompany your visit.

By car

There is no visitor car parking at the Castle, so we recommend you use public car parks in the town centre. Details about parking can be found on www.windsor.gov.uk

By train

The nearest stations are 'Windsor & Eton Central' or 'Windsor & Eton Riverside'. Visit National Rail Enquiries for times and fares.

By coach / bus

Green Line 702 service operates daily services from Greenline Coach Station which is near Victoria station, London.

Surbiton Coaches runs a shuttle bus service between Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace from spring to autumn.

Tour companies operate excursions to Windsor Castle from many London hotels. For details, please ask your hotel concierge.

Refreshments

Make time for tea and cake in the Undercroft Café at the Castle. The café is situated in one of the oldest surviving spaces in the 1,000 year old Castle.

Windsor Castle is fully accessible. It is situated at the top of a steep hill, and long distances have to be covered on site. Concessionary rates are available for you if you have a disability and a companion is admitted free of charge. In line with government policy you should, if you are not exempt, wear a face covering whilst inside Windsor Castle, the shops and until sat at a table in the Café. Accessible toilets and a Changing Places are available. Limited seating is available and registered assistance dogs are welcome. A BSL multimedia tour and an accessible café are available.
