The Piazza San Marco

Both drawings are preparatory studies for the pair of paintings in the Piazza San Marco displayed to the right. The paintings work as a pair, with the architectural masses balanced on opposing sides of each composition. Canaletto's drawings were made for Smith to give a general impression of the intended balance of light and dark in each painting.
