The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London broke out on Sunday 2 September 1666 and raged for three days. Charles II soon commissioned surveys to assess the extent of the destruction and assist with the rebuilding efforts. Hollar was appointed the king's scenographer or ‘Designer in Prospects’ in November 1666. In this detailed map he made of the city, the areas destroyed by fire are portrayed as ghostly blank spaces with major lost buildings depicted as simple outlines.
