Spring and Autumn

Rosalba Carriera made several sets of personifications of the four seasons. These two works show Spring and Autumn attended by cherubs who bring flowers and fruit; they did not belong to the same set as Summer and Winter exhibited earlier. They were given to Queen Mary in 1923 and were never part of Smith’s collection.
