Artists in the Dutch Golden Age adhered to the classical distinction between tragedy as high art, for the depiction of the noble hero, and comedy as a vehicle for the portrayal of the lower classes. Drawing on Dutch paintings in the Royal Collection, exhibition curator Desmond Shawe-Taylor examines the comedy of manners in these scenes of everyday life.
