The Physic Garden

Nursery class in the Physic Garden looking at herbs

Behind the Abbey Strand Learning Centre the Physic Garden waits to be explored! This newly opened public garden consists of three distinct areas, each representing a phase in the Palace’s 900-year history. A flowering meadow of medicinal plants evokes the 15th-century monastic gardens of Holyrood Abbey; flowering crocuses, tulips and alliums, planted in a geometric pattern reflect the design of 17th-century gardens; and a third area reimagines the first Physic Garden to be established in the Palace grounds 350 years ago.

The following resources have been created to support self-led visits to the Physic Garden before or after your taught session at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
