A Mystery Object for a Mystery Location: South Asia

Henrik Immanuel Wigström (1862-1923), Magnifying glass (RCIN 38805)

Each week of our journey ‘Round the World with the Royal Collection’ has featured a mystery object which, if correctly identified, revealed our next location.

Take another look at our latest mystery object – did you guess what it was and where it was from?

This object is one of a pair of silver and silver-gilt betel-nut boxes, or paandans. The six separate compartments of this paandan were designed to contain the individual ingredients required to prepare paan, with the hinged lids shaped to resemble betel leaves.

Paan, made of areca nut, various seeds and spices, lime paste and occasionally tobacco wrapped in a betel leaf, is a mild stimulant usually offered at the end of formal ceremonies in India.

Watch this stop-motion film to see how the boxes are assembled, opened and closed.
We hope that you have enjoyed our journey of mystery objects and mystery locations – we leave you with one final mystery object, this beautiful peacock barge which has a surprise function:
