A Mystery Object for a Mystery Location: Italy

Henrik Immanuel Wigström (1862-1923), Magnifying glass (RCIN 38805)

Each week of our journey ‘Round the World with the Royal Collection’ will feature a mystery object which, if correctly identified, will reveal our next location.

Last week, we invited you to work out where our next location would be by looking at a detail of this mystery object. Did you guess correctly? Take another look at the object and read on to find out more about this object.

This fan displays three principal and four subsidiary views of sites which would have been visited by British visitors to the Italian city of Rome in the eighteenth century. The central oval shows the Pantheon; the oval to the left, the three columns of the Temple of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux); and the oval on the right shows the Basilica of Maxentius or Constantine.

Thousands of fans similar to this were made in Italy for the tourist trade – and this particular fan may have belonged to Princess Augusta (1768–1840), the second daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte.

Next week we will journey to another mystery location through the Royal Collection – but can you guess where? Take a look at this mystery object, and see whether you can work out where our next location will be. You will have to join us next week to find out!
