Portrait miniatures

The earliest miniatures of Russian rulers were made by Charles Boit, enameller to William III and Queen Anne, who was also employed by Peter the Great. Some of these pieces were painted from life, whereas others are small copies after official portraits, or from the mid nineteenth century, photographs, disseminated as gifts across Europe.
