Pier table and a pair of stands

The table was probably designed to stand between windows below a mirror whilst flanked on each side by candle-stands. The boxy, rectilinear outline is derived from Chinese furniture, while the Greek key decoration is classical in origin. The front and top of the table and tops of the stands are decorated with the cipher ‘GR’ (Georgius Rex) for the King, encircled by the Garter. Supplied to George I, probably for the ‘Pillar Room’ in the private apartments at Kensington Palace Cat. 101
