Pellegrini's Apollo and Daphne
The subjects of these paintings are from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the epic poem that recounts the love of gods and goddesses for mortals. Apollo raises his hand in surprise as Daphne changes into a laurel tree. Smith did not collect paintings by Pellegrini, perhaps out of loyalty to his close friends Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, and these paintings are part of a set acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707–1751).
