On board the Royal Yacht Britannia

These portraits were both produced aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia during The Duke of Edinburgh's world tour of 1956–7. The Duke, keen that Seago should 'find something to challenge his remarkable talent for landscape painting’, had invited the artist to join him on the return voyage from Australia, taking in the Antarctic Peninsula. During the journey Seago produced over 60 paintings. The Duke, also a keen artist, set up his own portable easel on deck as captured in this atmospheric painting by Seago.
