Medals commemorating the Battle of Culloden

Several medals commemorating the Battle of Culloden were struck. This version is probably the finest of them, designed by Richard Yeo, afterwards engraver to the Royal Mint. It was created for a collectors’ market, and issued in gold, silver and copper. The obverse shows a bust of the Duke of Cumberland, and the reverse Hercules trampling Discord while raising Britannia. The Latin inscription on the reverse translates as "The rebels driven from England and defeated at Culloden, 16 April 1746." Cat. 65
