HMS Magpie

Shortly before Prince Philip’s marriage to Princess Elizabeth, King George VI named his future son-in-law Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich with the style of His Royal Highness. In 1949 the Duke was appointed First Lieutenant and second-in-command of HMS Chequers in Malta. In July 1950 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander and in September he was appointed in command of the frigate HMS Magpie shown here in the Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta.
