A pair of horizontal sundials

This pair of sundials was commissioned from the famed London clockmaker Thomas Tompion by William III and placed in the Privy Garden at Hampton Court Palace. They would have been used to regulate the clocks in the Palace. The dials can be seen as small spikes in Knyff’s panoramic painting of Hampton Court Palace, hung to the left. Today facsimiles stand on the original plinths in the same place.
