The Royal Collection contains a rich variety of material from India. These works span more than 600 years of artistry and craftsmanship. Together, they reflect Britain and India’s shared history – from cultural fascination and exchange, to the complex dynamics of empire and commonwealth.

Almost every region of India is represented. Jewelled daggers, manuscripts, scientific instruments and enamelled boxes showcase the region’s finest materials and techniques.

Watch our film to explore the Collection, including works that were sent to the British Court as exquisite diplomatic gifts, with others collected by members of the Royal Family during in-person visits.

Today, much of the South Asian collection can be seen on display in royal residences like Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Sandringham House.

Watch this short film to see highlights of the Indian collection – including a gem-set necklace belonging to Queen Victoria, and a katar or dagger combining British and Indian motifs.
