Photographs 1842-61

Albums compiled by Prince Albert, reflecting his beliefs surrounding photography

Photographs albums

During his lifetime, Prince Albert (1819-61) compiled a small number of albums entitled Photographs. Similar to the Calotype albums, the Photographs albums feature a range of subject matter, including portraits,  studies of  animals  and natural phenomenon, and copies of works of art

Notable inclusions in the albums are a series of photographs taken in India by Narayan Dajee, a series of tableaux of Richard II by Martin Laroche (1814-86) and a portrait by Maharajah Duleep Singh (1838-93), entitled The Pundit.

The final album in the series was completed following Prince Albert’s death in 1861.
