Join Sir Jonathan Marsden, art historian and former Director of the Royal Collection, for this  online lecture on European Sculpture in the Royal Collection.

In this digital lecture, Sir Jonathan will share his most recent research into European sculpture and explore some of the discoveries and surprises he encountered within the Collection whilst preparing his new and comprehensive catalogue of European Sculpture in the Royal Collection, published this autumn.

The lecture will reveal some of the practical challenges Sir Jonathan encountered during 27 years spent preparing this four-volume work, which includes 1,800 works of art ranging in date across five centuries.

The catalogue will throw new light on the tastes of successive monarchs, their dealings with artists, and their varying approaches to the art of sculpture. The creation of sculpture takes longer than work in other media, and there is more scope for mishaps and misunderstandings along the way. The talk also presented discoveries, re-attributions and new identifications that have arisen in the course of the lecturer's work.

There will also be an opportunity for participants to submit questions throughout the talk and Sir Jonathan will answer as many as possible at the end of his lecture.
