We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Royal School of Needlework with this silk shading hand embroidery class inspired by the exhibition, Japan: Courts and Culture at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace. The day will begin with a highlights tour of the exhibition, led by curator of the exhibition Rachel Peat, which will showcase some of the objects on display including the enamel bowl which inspired the delightful rabbit motif and some exquisite 19th century embroidered screens and panels, pictured below.
In this one-day course, RSN tutor Helen McCook will teach you how to embroider this beautiful motif, inspired by the rabbits which feature on an enamel bowl in the exhibition (RCIN 41530), created by Andō Jūbei in c. 1915. During the class, Helen will teach you hand embroidery techniques including silk shading, goldwork couching and surface stitches including laid work.
This class is suitable for all levels of skill from beginner to advanced. Included in the ticket cost is your embroidery kit, which will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but please do not bring scissors as you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.
