Combine a visit to see George IV: Art & Spectacle at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace with a visit to the Royal Mews, where you can see the dazzling Gold State Coach used at George IV’s Coronation in 1821.
The Royal Mews
The Royal Mews is home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages and is considered to be one of the finest working stables in existence. The Royal Mews is responsible for all road travel arrangements for The Queen and members of the Royal Family and is home to the most dazzling display of coaches including the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, the newest carriage created for The Queen in 2013 that contains more than 100 artefacts from 1,000 years of British history.
George IV: Art & Spectacle
George IV is arguably the most magnificent British monarch ever recorded and formed an unrivalled collection of art, much of which remains in the Royal Collection. As the ‘first gentleman of Europe’, he purchased paintings, metalwork, textiles, furniture, watercolours, books and ceramics in vast numbers, many of these works by the finest artists of the day. Bringing together Dutch and Flemish masterpieces, portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Joshua Reynolds, delicate French porcelain, intricate goldsmiths’ work and elegant books and drawings, this exhibition will present George’s life through the art that enriched his world.
