Join us for this series of talks given by members of the curatorial and conservation teams at Royal Collection Trust. Each talk will focus on a different artwork on display in our current exhibition at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace: Drawing the Italian Renaissance.

The talks will last approximately 15-20 minutes and aim to provide a little further insight into the history of the art, the techniques demonstrated by the artist and, in the case of our conservators, some behind-the-scenes information about how some of the drawings have been cared for and restored to prepare them for public display.

Please be aware that, while every effort is taken to deliver the programme as described below, it may sometimes be necessary for speakers or titles to change. In this event, we will update the programme below to ensure that it is kept as accurate as possible.

The programme of talks will be as follows:

Thursday 14 November ‘Anatomical Drawing in the Renaissance’
by Martin Clayton, Head of Prints and Drawings and Exhibition Curator
Renaissance artists were expected to understand how the body works, so that they could depict figures that were ‘true to life’. But how did that work in practice? This talk will look at life drawing, dissection and anatomical knowledge in the Renaissance, and will focus on the activity of the two most prominent artist-anatomists, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

Thursday 5 December‘Two Conservation Case Studies’
by Ashleigh Brown, Paper and Photographic Conservator
This talk will consist of a brief review of two conservation treatments on two very different works on paper.  Procaccini’s The Transfiguration and Tibaldi's The Annunciation of the Conception of the Baptist were created with very different materials - and thus required very different conservation treatments in the lead up to this exhibition.

Thursday 23 January‘Conserving the Campi Cartoon’
by Victoria Button, Head of Paper Conservation
This talk will focus on the conservation treatment of a cartoon, The Virgin and the Child, by Bernardino Campi.  It is a drawing that was used for transfer, through squaring up, for an altarpiece now in the church of Dan Biagio, Codogno. This a rare su

Thursday 30 January'Giovanni and Gentile Bellini: Art, Family and Fame in Renaissance Venice' by Rhian Wong, Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings
This talk will look at two works from Drawing the Italian Renaissance associated with the Venetian artists and brothers, Giovanni and Gentile Bellini: the drawing of The head of an old man by Giovanni Bellini (c.1430 – 1516) and a drawing of A dromedary, thought to be a copy of a drawing by Gentile Bellini (c.1429 – 1507). The talk will consider the function of the drawings, the importance of the Bellini family connections and the fame associated with their art.

    Thursday 20 February'Polidoro da Caravaggio'
by Lauren Porter, Curator of Works on Paper and Exhibition Curator
Polidoro da Caravaggio was one of the most celebrated artists in Renaissance Rome. From his origins as a member of Raphael’s prolific workshop, he later specialised in painting the facades of palaces in Rome, before retreating to Naples and Sicily following the Sack of Rome. This talk will examine three contrasting drawings by this versatile artist from various stages of his career – a striking red chalk head study, a design for an engraved rock crystal and a preliminary drawing for an altarpiece.
