Spend the day at Windsor Castle to stitch this charming botanical silk shaded design and enjoy a rare and exclusive curator-led private view of the Print Room which houses some of most important collections of works on paper in the world.
The design is inspired by this watercolour, painted by Seventeenth Century English entomologist, gardener and botanical artist Alexander Marshal in c.1650- 1682. His extensive ‘florilegium’, a collection of four albums of paintings of flora and fauna was presented to George IV in the 1820s and now forms part of the Royal Collection, a selection from which will be available to view in the Print Room during your visit. This particular watercolour features, amongst other plants and animals, a sprig of borage, which Sarah has chosen as the inspiration for the motif.
Using a selection of vibrant, pure silk threads and stitching on an ivory silk fabric, you will learn how to recreate this charming design using the technique of silk shading or ‘painting with a needle’. You will be introduced to and guided in the technique and given useful tips and techniques including how to stitch with multiple needles and how to blend colours to create a natural and realistic effect. No previous experience of this technique is necessary for you to enjoy this class as it is suitable for all levels of ability.
This class is suitable for all levels of skill from beginner to advanced. Included in the ticket cost is your embroidery kit, which will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but please do not bring scissors as you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.
