MARY STEEN (1859-1939)

The Duke and Duchess of York in York House, St James's Palace, with Heather

1896

RCIN 2905389

The Duke of York, later King George V (1865-1936), and the Duchess of York, later Queen Mary (1867-1953), are photographed in a sitting room at York House. Their collie Heather lies in front of them. Through posing with their pet dog, the photograph somewhat mirrors the painting of Princess Mary of Cambridge with Nelson, a Newfoundland dog by Sir Edwin Landseer (RCIN 402300), which hangs on the wall behind them.
