Victoria and Albert: Gifts Exchanged

Gifts exchanged between a royal couple

W SCHMIDT (ACTIVE 1836)

Bracelet with a miniature of Prince Albert and a photograph of Victoria, Princess Royal

1840

RCIN 422251

Schmidt’s miniature was painted in Coburg shortly before Prince Albert’s marriage to Queen Victoria in February 1840. On 25 January Prince Albert wrote to his fiancée

with this letter I send you a little miniature to have fixed in a bracelet to wear in the morning

Prince Albert

The bracelet is complex, with three separate parts which have been added to the original setting of the miniature. The clasp lid is decorated with chased pansies for love (the juice of a pansy was used as a love potion in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and forget-me-nots for remembrance.
