Triumphal arches were erected to welcome the Prince in a number of the cities that he visited. The arches in Colombo were made using bamboo and fruit grown on the island: betel-nut, oranges, mangoes, plantain, coconuts and bananas. Another impressive arch – crafted from branches and leaves – was formed into the shape of two elephants with their trunks lifted.
