During Queen Victoria's reign, St George's Hall at Windsor Castle became a regular setting for State Banquets and official dinners. On such occasions, temporary giltwood structures were erected at the east and west ends of the hall so that George IV's magnificent Grand Service might be prominently displayed. The arrangement was intended to complement the gold plate on the dining table. This watercolour shows the State Visit of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, in 1844, with the buffet display clearly in view on crimson velvet on the far wall.
